After a work injury
What to do, in order
If you are badly hurt, emergency care comes first. Everything below can wait until you have been seen.
- 01
Step 1: Get care first
For a serious injury, call 911 or go to an emergency room. Tell the staff it happened at work.
Call 911 for anything that can't wait
Say it was a work injury
- 02
Step 2: Tell your employer
Report the injury to your supervisor or HR as soon as you can, and ask what form or process they use. Write down the date, the place and who saw it.
- 03
Step 3: Make sure a claim is filed
You or your employer files the claim with the payer. The payer gives it a number. If you are not sure it was filed, ask your employer and the payer.
- 04
Step 4: Choose a provider the payer will pay
Ask the payer which providers can see you on the claim. Call us with your claim number, your employer's name and the date you were hurt, and we confirm with the payer before booking you.
- 05
Step 5: Go to visits and keep your work-status notes
At each visit your doctor records what you can and can't do at work. Keep a copy of every note, and tell us who else needs one.
How bills are handled
How the bills are handled
On an allowed claim, we bill the payer, not you. If a visit isn't allowed, or the claim is denied or still pending, we tell you before the visit how it would be billed and give you a written estimate.
The payer decides the claim. We don't. If you disagree with a decision, the payer's notice says how to ask for a review, and we can send your records on request.
What to have ready when you call
Your claim number, if you have one
Your employer's name
The date you were hurt

Plainly
What we do not do
What we do not do
We do not contact people about their injuries; you call us.
We do not promise a result or a recovery date.
We do not decide your claim or advise you on a settlement.
We do not replace your physician or an emergency room.
Questions about your rights
For questions about your claim, a denial or a settlement, the payer's notice or a workers' compensation attorney is the right place to ask. We can send your records when you request them.
Next step
Call with your claim details
Our coordinator confirms your claim with the payer and finds a time around your shift.
- A sudden severe headache or neck pain, dizziness, trouble speaking or seeing, new weakness or numbness, numbness in the groin or saddle area (between the legs and buttocks), or new bladder or bowel trouble needs emergency care now. Call 911 or go to an emergency room.
